故事主要讲述老木匠戈佩托造了一个木偶，给他起名叫匹诺曹。匹诺曹一心想成为真正的男孩，但因为撒谎学坏而受到惩罚，变成了驴被坏人贩卖的冒险经历。这样的经历也使得匹诺曹从一个任性淘气、满口谎言、贪玩厌学的小木偶变成一个懂礼貌、爱学习、敬长辈的好孩子的过程。

老人戈佩托做了一个木偶并给木偶取名匹诺曹。戈佩托卖掉了上衣，给匹诺曹换取了课本。可是匹诺曹一心贪玩，卖掉课本去看了木偶戏。匹诺曹的金币又被狐狸和猫骗走。匹诺曹在仙女的教导下，决定成为一个用功读书的好孩子，可是匹诺曹在坏同学的怂恿下被引诱到玩儿国，在那里匹诺曹变成一头驴。后来，匹诺曹又被鲨鱼吞进了肚子里，在鲨鱼肚子里面匹诺曹和戈佩托相遇并成功地逃了出来。他们后来在海边住下，匹诺曹最终也变成一个真正的小孩子。
